Plant Power Section A

Plant Power is an integrated art class where students explore art and nature together. Students will listen to Native American plant stories and learn about the special plants that grow in the Pacific Northwest and why they matter to people and the environment.
Students will keep a nature sketch journal to draw what they see, write down their ideas, and record their outdoor discoveries. They will learn about the visual arts elements and create a variety of different art projects inspired by plants, landscapes, and the stories they learn.
By gardening, making art, and spending time outside, students will build a strong connection to the earth. This class helps students learn about indigenous traditions that teach caring for the land, helping our communities, and showing respect for nature—all while growing their artistic skills and curiosity about the natural world.
This class is rooted in the Tend, Gather, Grow Curriculum and the Plant Teachings Toolkit.

Sprouts is an integrated art class where students explore nature, garden, and make art! Students will explore a wide range of visual arts materials and make art inspired by the plants, animals, and the natural environment we live in. Students will enjoy stories about plants and create nature journals to record their learning. We will learn how plants help people, other creatures, and the Earth and show us how we can help the world too!
Through outdoor explorations, and making art, students will learn how to care for the earth, respect animals and plants, and discover indigenous traditions that teach kindness and respect for all living things.
This class is rooted in the Tend Gather Grow curriculum and the Plant Teachings Toolkit.

It’s Not Fiction

Get ready for another semester of writing! This semester, students will take the writing process and apply it to non fiction topics of their choice including interviewing people and writing biographies! Students will also explore the complex task of functional writing – writing directions to a game or for a favorite recipe. Students are welcome to use technology for their writing including voice to text and typing.

In this 5th/6th drawing and writing class, students will use Minecraft to design and build virtual structures and large scale projects. Students will also create presentations of these projects that include 2D drawings, descriptions, and diagrams to communicate their designs and process.

Leave your assumptions behind and bring a sense of curiosity to the art-room. Students in this class will experiment with drawing, painting and journaling methods that encourage presence, sensory awareness, and creative freedom. Explorations in mark making, print making, paint application, color, and composition will allow students to discover the possibilities of multiple materials and develop their own natural language of lines, shapes, and forms. Students will collect and maintain a record their discoveries in sketchbooks. These books will also provide a location for foundational arts skills practice and monthly reflections. This class is process oriented and students will create a wide range of personally satisfying artwork.

High School Prep – I Got the Skillz
Grades 7-8

This class is for students close to going to high school. In this class, we focus on skills needed for academic success in high school: Reading comprehension of Informative and Narrative texts and responding to questions with extended answers. Weekly we read texts, listen to a short lecture, and have an academic discussion. Then, we create a study guide from our notes so we can take a quiz on the topic.
Note: This class is meant for students in grades 7 and 8 as they prepare for high school. This class is not HCC/AL eligible and only serves students in the grade band.

Lab Classes
The following Lab Classes are designed for students who are below grade level in these subjects.
Students do not sign up for the classes, but are assigned Lab Classes through Counselor/Teacher recommendation. Talk to your counselor if you think your student should be taking a lab class.
PLEASE NOTE:
- Students remain in the lab class until skill mastery is achieved and could be exited from the class prior to the end of the term or remain in the class for the next semester. Because students can exit at any time, students need to have another certificated class on their schedules.
- Lab classes DO count as one of your 5 (full time)/3 (part time) classes, take attendance, and provide monthly progress. But, you must still maintain another certificated class on your student’s schedule.
- These classes will maintain a waitlist if full. As students exit, other students can join mid- term from the waitlist or as requested if there is space.
Reading Lab

Students will be taught phonics, phonemic awareness, high frequency words and reading strategies at their individual reading level in small groups. Unlock the secrets of spelling and become a confident writer! In this class, you’ll explore the sounds and patterns behind words, going beyond memorization to truly understanding language.
As you sharpen your spelling, you’ll also master writing: crafting clear sentences, building strong paragraphs, and creating stories and essays. Fun activities and creative prompts will help you express your ideas with confidence.
Penmanship practice is integrated to support writing fluency, improving letter formation and flow so you can focus on content and creativity.

Skills Improvement
This class is designed to diagnose and support lagging skills in writing. Writing is a complex interworking of several different domains and if a student has any issue with any one of those domains, it can make the writing process laborious or antagonistic. In this class, we will work to make writing a positive process while supporting all skills so students can access writing for communication and learning at need.
This class will also provide many incentives to make working on these skills more appealing such as learning through games, choosing topics, working with peers, and, at times, rewards.

This class aims to build a solid foundation in these key math concepts.

The Elwha River: A Washington Case Study Section A
Grades 5-6

By mixing science topics with important social studies curriculum, students will be immersed in the complex history of our state and the important ecosystems at risk. This class will focus on water ecology in Washington and connect it to debates over whether we should dam our rivers. The Since Time Immemorial upper elementary/lower middle school curriculum will guide us through the history of rivers and the fight to restore them. Students will connect their learning to our salmon in the schools tank as well as explore articles, hands-on activities and group projects.
NOTE: Students can request either Section A or Section B but not both.

Monster Puppets
Grades 7-8

In this class, we will use foam, colorful fabrics, wild eyes, and plenty of adhesive to design and build quirky monster puppets—each with a unique personality and a backstory. Once the creatures come to life, the class collaborates to write an original play script, weaving together hilarious adventures and some unexpected twists. We might even add songs. From brainstorming wild ideas to rehearsing dramatic monster voices, every step is a mix of design, teamwork, and creative energy. By the end, the classroom transforms into a mini theater where these handmade monsters put on a show!

Tend, Gather, and Grow is an integrated visual arts class that blends visual arts, nature exploration, and social-emotional learning. Students will study Native American plant knowledge and stories, learning about the cultural, ecological, and medicinal importance of native and naturalized plants of the Pacific Northwest.
Throughout the course, students will use a sketchbook to record their observations, ideas and reflections through drawing and writing. The sketchbook will also provide a space for foundational art skills practice. Students will also create a variety of visual art projects inspired by the plants, landscapes, and teachings they encounter.
Through hands-on art activities, gardening experiences, and time spent outdoors students will build a deeper connection to the land. This class encourages an understanding of indigenous traditions that highlight healing, stewardship, and respect for the earth, while developing foundational artistic skills and a greater appreciation for the natural world.
Note: This class is rooted in the Tend, Gather Grow curriculum, and the Plant Teachings Toolkit. Native American plant knowledge and stories are woven throughout the curriculum.

Fruit Wars! is a writing game that engages students in writing collaboratively by creating fruit-based superheroes and villains (EX. – Watermelon Woman, The Masked Kiwi, Dr. Orange, etc.) who battle one another or cooperate to achieve a mutual goal.
Students will also develop a personal writing style and gain a stronger understanding of the writing process by engaging in the writing workshop model which includes a peer feedback cycle.
Students will read mentor texts/literature to uncover aspects of style and structure.

Join us to explore areas and parks around Cascade as we get exercise while we learn basic shelter building and survival skills, create art, play games, go on scavenger hunts, write, draw, paint, and practice identifying native plants. On rainy days we will adapt our activities and stay dry inside or use the covered court area. One parent required per week to accompany the group on our off campus adventures.
NOTE: Contractor classes only serve students within the grade band.

Brick Masters: Invent & Build

Invent your own LEGO masterpiece using Bricklink Studio and then build your creations!
Discover building techniques and tips used by the masters to bring your LEGO ideas to life! Studio is a 3D digital design program to model “MOCs” (My Own Creation) on the computer. Students will learn design principles and creatively build throughout the session as they learn techniques to make their imaginations into reality with LEGO. At the end of the session, students will complete a final project of their own design, and take home their building kit along with their Studio design files. Students can continue designing at home as BrickLink Studio is a free program.

Lego Robotics – Creative Contraptions

Elective. Technology
Let your imagination run wild with marvelous machines! In this class for inventive kids, we will explore fun new ways to build autonomous gadgets using sensors and motors, and discuss how real-world robots make industries function. Students will design and create original robotic arms, paper airplane launchers, catapults and more. Then, using everything we have learned, we will construct a collaborative mega-ball-mover! Note – this is an engineering and building camp that does not have a focus on programming.

Build and design real, functioning robots! Each day, students receive a short lesson, followed by guided building time. Breakfall – proper falling drills
Defensive drills – blocking, footwork
Defensive/offense self defense maneuvers
Team building games
Padded nunckaku basics
Each student will be asked to practice self control, self discipline, respect to others in class. To earn the merit rank of a belt, the student must demonstrate all material required for belt advancement.

Imagination Meets Movement! Kong Academy’s version of D&D brings imagination to life by combining creative storytelling with active, movement-based challenges. Students become the heroes of an unfolding fantasy adventure—solving puzzles, collaborating with allies, and overcoming physical quests that reflect the story’s twists and turns.
Each session blends tabletop roleplaying with real-life action: one moment they’re negotiating with a dragon, the next they’re navigating a maze or retrieving a magical relic. Guided by a game master, students work together to make decisions, support their team, and stay grounded in the face of high-stakes (and hilarious) adventures.

Electives serve students within the grade band only.
This class runs for 13 weeks. The last day of class is May 6th.

Make Your Mark
8th Graders Only

Activity
Eighth graders, this group is all about making your mark—on the wall, in our community, and in your future. This is your time to shine.
- Come meet and hang out with your fellow eighth graders for team building and collaboration activities
- Learn about different high school options
- Design and create an Eighth Grade Mural to leave as a legacy
- Be part of creating and implementing school-wide activities.
While this class is not mandatory, we would love all eighth graders to sign up. It’s going to be a great time!
This weekly activity is only for 8th grade students. This does not count as one of your classes and does not provide certificated contact. It does provide a ton of fun!

Independent Study Piano
Grades 4-8 or with prior instructor approval (see *)

Elective. Music
*Prerequisite: Intro to piano or instructor approval. (Also open to beginning piano students grades 4-8)
Students will continue to develop knowledge and understanding of scales, chords and basic theory as they continue to explore reading and playing more complex songs. Students will be encouraged to learn songs of their choice and to explore improvisation and creating original compositions.

Intro to Piano
Grades K-3
Thursday 10:00 – 10:25
Elective. Music.
Students will learn the notes on the piano, how to identify and read the notes on the Grand Staff (bass and treble clef), scales, chords, and an understanding of basic theory and reading music. Music played will begin with basic educational and familiar melodies, but opportunities for students to play appropriate arrangements of popular songs of their choice will also be provided.
NOTE: Electives serve students only within the grade band.

K-4 Intro to Guitar
Grades K-4
Friday 9:30 – 9:55
Elective: Music
Students will learn the basics of how to tune their guitar, how to read and play simplified chords, and how to read and play single string tab. Students will learn familiar, old, and current songs. As students progress, they may be introduced to the CAGED chord system, more challenging tab, and more challenging songs. Students may also explore songs of their choice. Regular practice is required for success and students will be encouraged to perform for family members and the class.

Independent Study Guitar
Prerequisite: Previous enrollment in guitar or instructor approval. Also open to beginning guitar students grades 5-8

Elective. Music
Students will explore the CAGED chord system as well as additional chords and patterns. Strum patterns will become more complex and more difficult, multiple string tab will be introduced. Students will be encouraged to learn songs of their choice and will be encouraged to create their own chord patterns, tab, and songs. Students will be assessed during the first few sessions and changes will be made if necessary, so that students are in the appropriate class.

Dungeon Master Academy
Grades 4-8

Elective. ELA
Learn to be a Dungeon Master and forge your own adventure! In this inclusive class about creative storytelling, kids won’t just be playing D&D as an adventurer, they will build magical worlds, draw amazing maps, and weave fantastic stories. Students will use craft materials to bring their campaigns to life, practice improv techniques, and learn the rules of D&D so that they can lead their own adventures. Then, working in groups, we will create characters and take turns running games for each other. At the end of the course, kids will take home custom adventure kits to share with friends and family!

Come play games with us! We will be learning new games, relearn old ones, and spending time playing fun games as a group. This is a great opportunity for your student to get some social interaction in a safe space with Jennifer.

Cascade Digital Shorts – Film Making
Grades 5-8

Elective. Art
Students learn to create their own short film, from script to screen! Cascade Digital Shorts program introduces young storytellers to the essentials of screenwriting, producing, directing, cinematography, and editing. Step behind the camera and bring your stories to life!
Through hands-on instruction, students will:
- Pitch and present projects to peers
- Develop engaging scripts and storyboards
- Operate cameras, light scenes, and capture sound
- Direct and act in their own productions
- Edit and add effects to bring their films to life
